The 52-week savings challenge: how it works and variations for any income
The 52-week challenge is one of the most popular ways to start saving, because it turns saving into a game. The idea is very simple: each week you save a little more than the week before. You start with an amount so small you barely notice it, and by the time the bigger weeks arrive, the habit is already in place.
How the classic version works
- Week 1: you save 1.
- Week 2: you save 2.
- Week 3: you save 3.
- … and so on until week 52, when you save 52.
By the end of the year you'll have saved 1,378. Use whatever unit makes sense for your currency: if 1 is too little, multiply everything by 5, by 10 or by whatever fits your income.
How much you end up with, by variation
| Variation | Week 1 | Week 52 | Total for the year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | 1 | 52 | 1,378 |
| Half unit | 0.50 | 26 | 689 |
| Times 5 | 5 | 260 | 6,890 |
| Times 10 | 10 | 520 | 13,780 |
Variations so you don't give up
Reverse challenge
Start with the biggest amount (52) and work your way down. It's ideal if you get a bonus at the start of the year, and it keeps the toughest weeks from landing in December, when there are more expenses.
Free-choice challenge
Print a table with the numbers 1 to 52 and each week cross off whichever you like. In a tight week, pick a low number; in a good week, a high one. You'll still save the same total.
Fixed challenge
You save the same amount every week. For example, 26.50 a week also adds up to 1,378 a year. It's less fun but easier to automate.
Daily challenge
A daily version for small amounts: on day 1 you save 0.01, on day 2 you save 0.02 and so on until day 365. By the end of the year you'll have 667.95.
Tips to finish the challenge
- Use a separate account or a piggy bank that's hard to open.
- Schedule a weekly transfer if your bank allows it.
- Print the table and stick it on the fridge. Crossing off squares is motivating.
- Do it with someone: your partner, a friend or the family.
- Fund the challenge with your small daily expenses: the coffee you don't buy goes straight into the jar.
- If you miss a week, don't quit: catch up later.
What to do with the money at the end
Ideally the challenge has a purpose from day one:
- If you don't have an emergency fund, that's the priority.
- If you have expensive debt, use it to pay it off (see the snowball or avalanche method).
- If you already have both, put it toward a specific goal: a trip, moving out or starting to invest. See how much it could grow with the compound interest calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you save with the 52-week challenge?
In the classic version, saving 1 in week one, 2 in week two and so on up to 52, you end the year with 1,378. If you multiply each amount by 10, you end up with 13,780.
Can I start the challenge at any time of year?
Yes. What matters is 52 consecutive weeks, not starting in January.
What if I miss a week?
Don't quit. Make up the amount the following week or spread it over several weeks. You can also cross off the squares in any order depending on how your month is going.
